Nature Park Lonsko Polje

Nature Park Lonsko Polje - The largest nature park of central Croatia is Lonjsko Polje, located in the River Sava valley, east of Zagreb. Covering an area of 506 km2 it is one of the largest preserved European wetlands, protected by the Ramsar Convention as a wetland area of world importance. The park provides the atmosphere of peace and tranquility characteristic of wide wetland expanses.

Growing alongside calm waters covered in water lilies are primeval oak forests, particularly beautiful at dusk. The greatest wealth of Lonjsko Polje are its 250 bird species. These include numerous small birds, different types of duck, and still best know inhabitants of the park, storks, which has build their nests on the roofs of the lovely timber built village houses. One of such a village is Cigoc, in 1994 declared to be first European Village of Storks.

Lonjsko Polje has been included in the UNESCO's tentative list of World heritage sites.
